MORE wildflowers could be blooming on verges in Okehampton town centre, after plans were discussed to repeat the wildflower border beside New Road.
Town county councillor Kevin Ball told Okehampton Town Council at its meeting on June 24 that he would be happy to provide ‘locality funding’ – his grant for local projects from the county council – to plant up further areas in the town.
He said: ‘As part of the First World War celebrations I gave some of my locality grant to the town council to plant the wildflowers at the start of New Road. The flowers do look lovely and it would be lovely to have them in other areas of the town as well. I’d be really happy to extend that if the town council felt that was a good idea.’
Councillor Greta Button asked if others in the town could be involved in the project as well as the town council.
‘There are a lot of people interested and I wondered if there was a way for a group of people, local families, to get involved,’ she said.
She suggested a meeting with Cllr Ball to work out the best way of going about this.
Cllr Ball also offered to set aside some of his locality grant, which is £10,000 a year, towards the town council marking the 75th anniversary of VE Day in May 2020.
