IN these days of rapidly rising energy costs and an almost frenzied desire to reduce carbon footprints, it seems rather odd, to say the least, that West Devon Borough Council finds it necessary to compete with the sun and natural daylight to illuminate the Market Street car park in Okehampton during the day.

This car park is regularly patrolled by council wardens and, while these gentlemen can spot an individual parking ticket with absolutely no problem, it seems strange that they fail to notice that the car park lights are all on, even on the sunniest days.

They would need to issue a lot of tickets just to cover the enormous waste of power!
