BOTH Okehampton squash teams won their fixtures last week to continue their good run of form.
The first team had a comfortable 5-0 victory over Exeter Golf and Country Club four, to cement their lead at the top of the Devon Mixed Squash division four. The second team meanwhile had a 3-2 victory over Newton Abbot four - their fourth consecutive victory.
For the firsts, Paul Burrows played with excellent accuracy, hitting good width and depth to outplay his opponent with a 3-0 victory. Phil Allin won 3-1, after some long rallies and some strong hitting proved the match winner. Phil Kemsley playing at three never truly got into a rhythm but did enough to win 3-1, while Arnie Searle had a comfortable victory 3-0. Clive Marais completed the clean sweep for Okehampton, winning his match 3-0 to secure a 5-0 for the team and 20 points. Okehampton firsts are top of the division, leading second placed Newton Abbot three by 12 points.
Okehampton seconds had another good home win, this time against high flying Newton Abbot four.
Sue Stanbury and Simon Mckinnel started the team off on a good foot with two comprehensive 3-0 wins. Sue used a good variation in her game to beat her opponent whilst Simon is running into good form and is now hitting the ball cleanly and with good variation. At three Shane Vallance enjoyed long rallies with his gifted young opponent but eventually went down 3-1. At string two Chris Law was outplayed by his strong opponent, which meant that the match hinged on Ed Bewes in the string one match. Ed was behind 2-1 but increased the intensity of his game and to good effect, the greater speed applied in his game meant that he took the tie 3-2 and his team winning by 15-8.
The team are now fifth in the Devon Mixed Squash division five
