MEMBERS of Okehampton Friendship Group celebrated the group’s first birthday on Friday last week with a party at the Ockment Centre. 

A lavish afternoon tea included strawberries and cream and bucks fizz, with musical entertainment provided by the Wellbeing Singers.

West Devon mayor the Rev Mike Davies, Okehampton mayor Janet Carpenter and Okehampton mayoress Christine Marsh were among the guests.

Group co-ordinator Sue Leech said: ‘When the WI folded in February last year, it left a void in the life of many of the local ladies, so I thought, right, let’s set something up.

‘At first just WI ladies turned up, then they spread the word and brought friends, and people started contacting me.

‘Some people have said to me I’m so glad you started this group because before I didn’t see anyone from month to month. It’s lovely.’
