A SUPERB performance by Rebecca Chapman from Okehampton College saw her achieve second place in the English Schools Athletics Association Multi Events finals in Sheffield at the weekend.

Rebecca, aged 17, won the silver medal in the heptathlon with a score of 4537 which is a National Standard for this event.

The heptathlon requires athletes to compete in seven events (hurdles, long jump, javelin, 800m, high jump, shot and 200m) over two days. Rebecca, who has already won a bronze medal in the ESAA 100m finals and a gold medal in the 4 x 100m relay finals earlier in the year capped an extremely successful season with this silver medal.

Okehampton College was also represented by Josh Bush in the intermediate boys octathlon competition. Josh, in his first year of competitive athletics, performed well and finished in 24th. His performance included a superb 1.75m in the high jump.

Daryll Chapman, the principal of Okehampton College, said how pleased he was to have had two students representing the college on the national stage.

'Athletics is very strong within the college and I hope the success of these two students will inspire others to take up the sport in the future'.

Rebecca was also part of the Devon team which came second in the team event, being narrowly beaten into first position by a team from Hertfordshire.
