SPORTS organisation OCRA is encouraging people to improve their health and benefit from the legacy of the London Olympics.

The organisation is delivering 'More Active, More Often', a scheme to put adults of all ages and young people over the age of 14 in contact with the right sports club or organisation for them. The project is supported by Active Devon and Sport England.

OCRA is hoping to encourage people still inspired by the Olympics and Paralympics to enrol in fitness, sport, dance, walking, swimming, running and other activity sessions and clubs as part of their new year's resolution.

Stuart Lord from OCRA said: 'With over 100 contacts for activity clubs and groups, new sporting sessions starting all the time and fantastic offers at Phoenix, Parklands, and Chaos gyms, and Okehampton Squash Club, there has never been a better time to follow up your hopes for 2013.

'New for 2013 we have fitness and dance classes, volleyball, "Back to Hockey", encouraging those who haven't played for a while to take part, street surfing, seated exercise, martial arts, basketball, fencing, gymnastics, trampolining and much more.

'We want to see as many people as possible, particularly adults, to get involved in sport — the new year is as good a time as any, what with people making resolutions to get fit and try out new things. We need to capitalise on that and keep things going.

'2012 was an amazing year for sport, and people should get involved and make 2013 a fantastic year locally for sport in Okehampton. So make this year a more active one and contact OCRA now.'

The new year also sees the launch of new clubs and sporting opportunities for adults in the Okehampton area.

Clubs across the area have seen an increase in participation and interest in sports since the Olympic Games took place last summer. The team at OCRA want to build on that and encourage even more people to get involved.

This year promises to be another fantastic year for local sport, with the long awaited sports pavilion for Okehampton now closer to becoming a reality. Construction started in October 2012 on the pavilion, in a central position between the town's all-weather pitch, rugby pitch, cricket square and tennis courts, with views across the entire playing field site.

It will provide changing rooms, toilets, storage space for sports clubs, a social area, and office space for sport and community development projects. It will also act as a hub for town sporting events such as the annual Okehampton Sports Festival, and offer a viewing area for spectators.

The project has been shaped through the initial involvement of Peter Woodgate in 2008, and later in its design phase with Oxenham Consult.

The catalyst for the project was £600,000 of investment from Devon County Council through their Investing in Devon project back in 2008. The bid was backed by county councillors Christine Marsh and James McInnes, and the grant also supported the all weather pitch which opened in November 2009.
