Spin instructor Amy Paddon and her pupil, Jacob Powell, raised over £1,000 for a mental health charity by cycling for twelve hours straight on Friday (December 10).

The spinning session took place in the entrance hall of Parklands Leisure Centre in Okehampton to raise money for Sport in Mind, a charity which helps people with mental health issues by getting them involved in sport. By the end of the day the spinners had made £1,200, smashing their target.

Amy said: ’We are absolutely ecstatic about [it]. We had so many donations. The two big donations were from Edworthy concrete, Hydroguard Legal Services and my dad Steve Paddon plumbing and heating.’

Amy and Jacob started the herculean task at eight in the morning and left the bikes only to visit the toilet. They ate while cycling.

Two extra bikes were placed beside them to encourage others to cycle alongside them. Amy said that by the time the two had finished their challenge, friends, family and leisure centre employees had joined in.

’My mum, my boyfriend Steve and assistant manager Kat joined Jacob and I for the last two hours on the bikes for moral support,’ she said.

It is the first time anyone has completed a twelve-hour spin for the charity.
