Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one West
Okehampton Argyle 2
Hayle 1
ARGYLE certainly rode their luck in this game, but showed great character to come back from 1-0 down to take all three points. They are an entertaining side this season so it is a pity to see visiting supporters outnumbering home fans at present.
Hayle had the better of the opening exchanges and missed two good chances early on, one of them an open goal. They continued to open up the Okehampton defence as the half progressed and the home side had keeper Harry Geering to thank as he brilliantly tipped over a goal-bound shot on 20 minutes.
Seven minutes later, he was left helpless as Hayle's Kieran Harris powered home a superb header from a beautifully flighted right wing cross. Argyle then started to come back into the match and seven minutes before half-time, Ben Ferguson's tremendous shot was only inches over the Hayle cross-bar.
On 40 minutes Argyle produced an equaliser from a superb move. A great piece of one-touch play from Frankie Nomah-Koneh saw Ed Squire released on the right and his hard-driven low cross into the Hayle box was turned home by James Williams to tie the game.
The second half continued in the same vein although Argyle began to put Hayle under more pressure. The visitors still looked the more dangerous of the two sides and again squandered a number of chances, but Okehampton kept working hard.
The game was decided in Argyle's favour five minutes from time. A long ball into the Hayle box was chased by James Williams. Hayle keeper Davey Cheal got into a terrible mix up with his full back and the ball broke lose to Williams to fire home into an empty net. This was a stroke of luck for the home side but they were rewarded for their never say die attitude and fighting spirit and in the end these first points of the season were richly deserved.
The home side who were missing influential forward Ben Waters worked hard throughout. James Williams, Alex Wren and Ben Ferguson had outstanding games and Ed Squire and Sam Brooks also put in good performances, but at the end of the day, this was a good all round team performance and the whole squad deserves credit.
n On Saturday Argyle are away to Perranporth in the league, kick-off 3pm. Argyle seconds are at home to Bickleigh Reserves, ko 3pm, in Devon and Exeter division four while Argyle thirds are at home to Tipton St John Reserves in Devon and Exeter division 8, ko 3pm.
