PARENTS and visitors to Okehampton Primary are being asked not to park on the mini roundabout outside the school on Glendale Road when picking up or dropping off children.
The request follows a meeting at the school, highlighting the issues of child safety and traffic congestion.
Headteacher Brian Cunningham said: 'We have concerns about speed, parking on double yellow lines, congestion and, of course, the children's safety is our number one priority.
'The idea of the meeting was to explore what we could do to stop this from happening.
'The police and South West Highways have both been very supportive and are going to do traffic monitoring , to see if it warrants becoming a 20mph area.
'They are going to be more pro-active to keep speed down and they will issue penalty points.
'Over the years we have promoted healthy living, such as walking to school to help the environment, but at the end of the day it's the children's safety which is most important.
'I do appreciate there are parents who are unable to walk to school but we are really looking at reducing the number of people driving into the school grounds, to those who have a real need to do so.'
Mr Cunningham said the situation could be improved by free parking from West Devon Borough Council.
'Parents can take advantage of the free parking offered by West Devon, which means they can park in Waitrose car park for a limited time.
'As long it is during school and nursery drop-off and pick-up times and they display their permit from West Devon Borough Council, parents make use of the free parking.
'We have a wonderful community here at the school, it's about pulling together and I hope that people can respect what we are asking.'
