A QUIZ night at Okehampton Primary will help a nurse from Okehampton travel to Ghana and perform crucial surgery on people living in poverty. Della Ball, a staff nurse at Derriford Hospital, is planning to travel to Ghana this November with Operation Hernia. A charity set up by Dr Chris Oppong, a consultant surgeon from Derriford, Operation Hernia provides professional and educational opportunities to surgeons and surgical trainees in repair of long-standing groin hernias at rural hospitals in Ghana and Rwanda. In November, Dr Oppong, Simon Ashley and Jacob Akoh will lead a three week mission to Ghana involving six operating teams working in three different areas. Many international surgeons, anaesthetists and staff nurses are involved several times a year, and Della is planning to go in November. She will go in her own time, and fund her own flights and visas. Her immunisations were provided free of charge by the occupational health department at Derriford. To help Della's fundraising efforts, Okehampton Primary will host a family supper and quiz night on Friday, May 9 at 6.30pm. Everyone in attendance can enjoy a tasty dinner of curry, rice and naan bread or lasagne, salad and garlic bread. There will be a licensed bar and free squash. Tickets cost £7 for adults or £3.50 for children aged 16 and under. The winning team will receive a prize. Tickets are available from the school or by e-mailling Della Ball at [email protected]">[email protected]
