OKEHAMPTON College's Year 9 students recently engaged in a specially tailored performance of 'Last Orders', which is aimed at educating youngsters of 13 or 14 of the consequences of binge drinking, courtesy of the local Community Safety Partnership and the Solomon Theatre Company.

A theatre-style performance is followed by specially designed workshops which explore the themes of anti-social behaviour, teenage pregnancy and sexual health, as well as illegal purchase of alcohol. It shows students how alcohol affects the way people think, their inhibitions, attitude to risk and ultimately their self-control.

West Devon Borough Cllr Mandy Govier, chair of the community safety partnership, said: 'These performances are well received by the college students, and makes them aware of the dangers of alcohol, both in personal terms and the affect it can have on their community.

'Raising awareness and understanding of alcohol mis-use is a key priority of the community safety partnership.'

The performance has been developed by a number of agencies, including the police, NHS and the NSPCC, and is delivered in an accessible, hard-hitting style that captures its young audience.

The South Devon and Dartmoor Community Safety Partnership, which takes in the West Devon area, funded events in both Okehampton and Ivybridge Colleges, and a similar event will be taking place at Tavistock College in March.
