Police carried out a speed operation during low visibility on Dartmoor recently. Many drivers were driving at well above the speed that was safe, the police reported, saying anything above 25mph in poor conditions on Dartmoor puts animals and other road users at risk.

Meanwhile Dartmoor livestock protection officers said traffic collisions involving livestock on the moor were down in 2021,

In 2021, the figures show, 17 animals were involved in RTAs, with 89 of them killed — 16 ponies, 67 sheep and six cows ­— and 28 animals injured. Meanwhile 2020, which saw 113 animals killed — 13 ponies, 94 sheep and five cows — while 29 animals were injured.
