SEA shanty singers Mariners Away are riding the crest of a wave after a successful summer season.

The group, based at the Kings Arms in South Zeal, not exactly close to the sea, has completed a successful summer of engagements performing all over the South West from Falmouth to Gloucester, and have just returned from the Lyme Folk Festival in Dorset with great reviews from those who attended their sea-front gig.

Mariners Away first performed together back in 2008.

Some of the original group still sing, but over the years the line-up has changed and now there are more than 12 regular members of the crew.

In addition to performing at festivals they have sung at two weddings this year and many local venues.

They are already looking forward to next year with arrangements in place to attend the Falmouth Shanty Festival, the Wessex Festival and also the possibility of singing alongside top shanty group ‘Fishermans Friends’ down at Port Isaac.

Mariners Away meet every Thursday night at the Kings Arms, South Zeal.
