WE are firm supporters of the quest to reinstate a permanent daily rail service between Okehampton and Exeter.

Using the Sunday service we have had wonderful days out to Exeter shopping, Exmouth and Paignton. Our thoughts are that the terminus must remain at Okehampton’s existing station which already provides all the facilities and has such a character, good cafe and plenty of parking.

Access is also easy onto the moor for visitors and tourists. The Youth Hostel and start of the Granite Way are also marvellous attractions made available by the station.

The councillors are working hard in communicating with GWR and we wish them every success.

SINCE May I have been a regular user of the Sunday train service to and from Okehampton.

My wife and I catch the 9.18am train in Crediton to walk through tramlines wood to Fatherford viaduct.

Following trout filled Dartmoor streams to Waitrose my wife makes spending £10 very straightforward to let me collect a free Sunday paper.

We have the trip fine tuned almost to the minute to get us back to Okehampton station by 11.58am – via Simmons Park if time permits.

More often than not in recent weeks two carriages have been available and I have no doubt that this encourages wider usage of the service.

I hope that the initiative to run a daily service is successful and I look forward to the day when I can travel to Lydford, Tavistock and beyond via Okehampton.
