A SPECIAL concert to help aid underprivileged children in Romania is being hailed as a sweet success. The concert, performed by jazz band 'In The Sweet Bye and Bye,' took place in Fairplace Church, Okehampton and raised close to £600 to support the children in Romania. The money will go to support a unit caring for children in Slobozia, Romania, who suffer from AIDS and are HIV- positive. For 18 years, Jackie Adcock, wife of Edwin Adcock who plays drums in the band, has been working with underprivileged children in Romania and organised the concert to help raise vital funds to continue the support. Mrs Adcock said: 'I got involved way back through the Anneka Rice appeal. In lots of ways it's improved tremendously but the cost of living has spiralled , inflation has increased and so has poverty. 'The more money we can raise the better, it really will help. A lot of the children don't know they have the virus and it is still a stigma to talk about it.' Mrs Adcock expressed thanks to all who supported the concert and to all the people who have knitted items for the children. CDs of the concert are available from Rock Hen's Coop, Okehampton's independent music store found in the Arcade. All proceeds from the CDs will all be added to the money raised from the concert. The music performed was a programme of hymns and spirituals of New Orleans with vocal support coming from the Okehampton Men's Forum Choir.
