AN event that started in 2001 as 'a bit of fun' for a few friends has gathered a momentum all of its own and this year, the tenth anniversary, attracted 400 participants.
Held annually in July, Dunny Elson and the Okement Hash Harriers have been joined over the years by walkers of all ages to take part in the 'Ten Pub Walk'. They have raised funds for Devon Air Ambulance Trust — to date, the event has raised £44,700.
The walk, which has ten refreshment and drinking stops along the way, starts at the Sandy Park Inn near Chagford, and the 16-mile route goes through Throwleigh, South Tawton, Sticklepath and Belstone, ending in Okehampton.
The atmosphere is always good humoured and organiser, Dunny Elson, has been delighted with the growing success of the event, year on year.
He said: 'We never expected that we would have such interest from people right across the South West. It's now become a regular event with people joining us each year from as far as Plymouth, Torquay, Truro and even Bath. We set ourselves a target to raise £10,000 for our tenth anniversary and, thanks to the fantastic support from all participants, including their £10 entry fees and sponsorship, we completely smashed our target and raised over £12,000.'
Caroline Creer, fundraising director for Devon Air Ambulance Trust, said: 'This is a fantastic achievement and a real credit to the commitment and enthusiasm of Dunny and his fellow organisers.
'We would also like to extend our thanks to the pubs and businesses that support the day — the event simply couldn't happen without you. Well done and thank you to all.'
Next year's Ten Pub Walk takes place on Saturday July 7 and Dunny is now setting his sights on reaching total funds of £50,000. For further information visit http://www.tenpubwalk.co.uk">www.tenpubwalk.co.uk
