WITH much disappointment and increasing concern, I read (Times, December 1) of the move by West Devon Borough Council to prevent rugby football training taking place on the ground at Brightley.

The implications of this are far reaching and may have serious repercussions for the future of Okehampton Rugby Football Club.

This situation has arisen due to the phenomenal growth/interest in junior rugby and the sheer pressure this has created on existing facilities.

The club is proud to boast of a ground deemed fit to play county games on, but this comes with high maintenance costs, year following year. A certain amount of protection is required to keep repair costs down and over-playing is a situation to be avoided.

In a nutshell, the club urgently requires additional playing areas.

It is vital for the town council, West Devon Borough Council, the club itself and all others interested, to recognise the crucial part playing sport plays in the development of character, friendships made, health and well being of those who take part.

The loss of any activity connected with playing is a retrograde step. I sincerely hope this matter receives the important and prompt attention it deserves.

Young people of this area deserve no less.
