DIGNITARIES from across West Devon were present last week to witness a 'topping out' ceremony at the new £7-million care village in Hatherleigh.

The care village was 'topped out' in a special ceremony held on Wednesday, July 16. West Devon mayor, Terry Pearce, attended the event along with Hatherleigh's deputy mayor, Malcolm Jacobs. Also present were Dennis Bater and Gary Bush, who have supported the development since the first sods were cut nearly four years ago.

Martyn Russell, director of Gibraltar Holdings Ltd, the site's new owners, said he was delighted and privileged to be working with such a supportive community.

The ceremony saw the past and present mayors laying the final tiles on the roof. Afterwards, the site workers were treated to a traditional 'noggin' of ale by Mr Russell.

The Hatherleigh care village will comprise of a 50 bedded nursing home together with 15 close care or independent living apartments. It is planned to open later on this summer and will be operated by PSP Healthcare who also run Aalen House in Okehampton.

PSP Healthcare anticipate the development will create 60 jobs and boost the local economy.

The company will be holding a series of open days for prospective staff, residents and families in the run up to the opening. The first of these will be held on August 12 in Hatherleigh Community Centre from 10am to 1pm.
