MORE than a hundred years of Okehampton's history will come under the spotlight at a special event being held in the town this weekend.
The Okehampton Community Archive (OCA) is throwing a coffee morning on Saturday to show off 110 years worth of historical material connected with the town.
The OCA has officially opened its doors following three months of hard work to refurbish and fit out the archive's new home.
The archive was formed in 2009 with the aim of collecting and storing a 'Living History' of personal memories, photographs and documents from the people of the town. The archive will be stored in its digital format and be available to all.
The new centre is situated on Mill Road, and is planned to open two days a week to the public.
Members of the group are currently collecting, recording and collating information brought to them by the public.
Paul Vachon, a member of the OCA, said: 'We are getting more and more people coming forward to tell us of their experiences and stories and supplying photographs of the town.
'We are specifically looking at history in living memory, the period from 1900 to the present day. The new building will be the base of the project, and drop-in centre where we can meet and talk to people, scan, copy, digitize and print photos and documents.'
The OCA coffee morning takes place in the Charter Hall on Saturday, May 28 from 9am.
There will be photographs and memorabilia on display from the past 110 years, offering a glimpse into what the archive has to offer. All are welcome, and if you have a story or photograph to share, drop in and chat to the members at the event.
