Children from across Torridge have been learning valuable lessons at the annual Junior Life Skills, a free two-week event jointly organised by the Torridge and North Devon authorities.

Around 1,500 youngsters have been learning about day-to-day dangers and real-life emergencies in an interactive and fun way from professionals from various fields.

The sessions covered everyday risks, including coastal awareness, alcohol consumption, hand washing and bacteria, anti-social behaviour and first aid.

Torridge lead member for communities, Cllr Jane Whittaker, said: 'Serious messages are put across in such a way that the children all go home with a far greater understanding and appreciation of potential dangers. The chip pan fire and beer goggles are always fun, but do teach them a valuable lesson.'

Representatives from Devon and Cornwall Police, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, the Red Cross, Western Power, the Coastguard and Maritime Agency, the Dogs Trust in Ilfracombe, Safer North Devon and Torridge and North Devon Councils all contributed to the success of the event.
