A NEW footway and cycle path route is coming to fruition in Winkleigh.
Work started on the £90,000 scheme, provided by the Villages and Rural Communities Budget, on Monday. It will provide a dedicated off-road cycling and walking route, running from the village centre to the community sports centre.
Chairman of the parish council Marjorie Bowers said: 'I think the new cycle route will be especially excellent for the young people of the village.
'Having the path means they can access the centre easily and it also keeps them safe in the community, which is so important these days.'
Mrs Bowers expressed thanks to those involved in getting the project up and running: 'We are delighted that Devon County Council has given the go ahead and would like to thank Cllr John Rawlinson for his continuous help and support with the project.'
The funds will include work on new street lighting and a vehicle activated speed sign, which will make access to the sports facilities much safer for the community.
Cllr Rawlinson said the new footpath and cycle route would improve the village in more than one way: 'There is a double bonus to be gained by this development, as well as safer access, it will also improve the appearance of this part of the village.
'This is an exciting development for Winkleigh as it will enable young people to attend the sports centre in safety.
'It will also enable young mothers with young children to get to the playing field with ease and gain access to the play equipment.'
Deputy chairman of the parish council Peter Stutt said: 'We've waited a long time to get safe access between the village and the sports centre and are really pleased that the path is finally going ahead.'
Mr Stutt said the residents hope to accommodate another foot and cycle path which would run from the village to the airfield: 'Many people from the village use the airfield to walk their dogs but have to drive up there.
'Another path would offer residents more open amenity space where they can leisurely walk their dogs.'
The new 400m path will take approximately six weeks to complete and will offer residents a safe and enjoyable route to and from the village amenities.
