IN just under two amazing hours, Okehampton Young Farmers' Club raised a magnificent £1,600 for charity.

The YFC held a charity slave auction at Okehampton Conservative Club on May 25, and decided to divide the money raised between the Exeter Hospital Oncology Department and the Plymouth Hospital Oncology Department and the club itself.

Among the auction prizes on offer were a weekend for two in Sennen Cove, a round of golf for four from Ashbury Golf and Okehampton Golf Club, and meal vouchers from the Fox and Hounds in Bridestowe, the Tors in Belstone and the White Hart Hotel in Okehampton.

YFC members also donated a day's labour that included tractor driving, cleaning cars and farm machinery.

The next big event for the YFC is the Okehampton Show on Thursday August 9, where the group will be exhibiting in the young farmers' rally tent. The group's Devon County Show club cubicle will be on show, which earned second place.

The Okehampton Show dance will be held at Meldon Village Hall on the show day from 9pm to 1am. Entry is £5 for YFC members aged 16-plus, and £6 for non-members aged 18 or over.
