Okehampton Argyle 3

Kingsteignton Athletic 1

ARGYLE were once again without key players for this round one game. Goalkeeper Craig Mulholland and three other regular first team players were unavailable, but Argyle were able to call in some of their reserve team players and all performed well.

Striker Ed Bradshaw turned out in goal and put in a good solid performance against the South Devon Premier League visitors.

Argyle started strongly and took the lead on five minutes when Steve Madge received a ball in from the left and cleverly controlled the ball with his back to the goal before turning and firing past visiting keeper Faulkner from five yards.

Okehampton continued to dominate in midfield and extended their lead on 22 minutes when Ed Squire picked up the ball 30 yards out and blasted home an unstoppable shot for the goal of the game.

The second half saw Argyle increase their dominance in midfield and they continued to push Kingsteignton back, but 20 minutes in, Ed Squire was dismissed for a second bookable offence. However, Argyle held firm and in fact increased their lead with two minutes remaining. Ben Bickle making his first team debut capped a fine afternoon's performance when he received the ball wide on the right, cut in towards goal and unleashed a powerful ground shot which squeezed through Faulkner's hands and into the net. However, the visitors showed great fighting spirit when, in the last minute, a cross from the right was firmly headed home by substitute Russ Williams.

This was a good performance by a makeshift Okehampton team with Tom McGratton at the back and Alex Wren in midfield both putting in outstanding performances.
