Okehampton Argyle 2
Axminster Town 2
AFTER beating the league leaders the previous Saturday, Okehampton might have expected to gain all three points from this match against a team lying in the lower half of the table.
However after building up an early two goal lead, Argyle contrived to throw this away with some naive defending and in the end a draw was a fair result.
Argyle dominated early on and took the lead on 12 minutes when Steve Kinsey's shot was pushed onto a post by visiting keeper Adam Cowling and James Williams followed up to crash the ball into the roof of the net from six yards.
Eight minutes later, they doubled their lead when Gary Hird beat his marker wide on the left and cut into the box before firing home a great goal.
From this point on, however, they began to lose their dominance and several passes out of defence went astray to Axminster players.
On 27 minutes, Matt Mortimer was caught too far forward and the visitors played the ball over his head for Johnny Hurford to run on and blast the ball home from the edge of the box.
A minute later and the game was all square. Alex Wren was left exposed with two men to mark wide on the left and Axminster were able to play in a dangerous cross which was spilled by Argyle keeper Craig Mulholland, allowing Ben Turner to fire home from close range.
The second half was a fairly even contest and both teams had their chances to win the game. Argyle had a slight edge throughout the period and Cowling in the visiting goal made three good saves to deny Okehampton the points.
Argyle brought on substitutes Ollie Crimmins and Barry McConnell up front and although both made their mark, Okehampton just could not find that vital breakthrough.
This was a below par performance by Argyle and man of the match was Axminster keeper Cowling. Of the Okehampton players, James Williams was the best on view.
