OKEHAMPTON's first team took on Plym Valley in what was a crucial hockey match to save the the home side from relegation.
An early mistake from the Plym Valley midfield allowed Oke's Jo Moppett to make a long run, beating several defenders and the goalie to put Okehampton ahead. Plym Valley soon made the counter attack and looked dangerous but the ever ready Oke defence of Nicola Stoneman, Jane Jones, Carol Taylor, Katie Adams and keeper Shannon Osman worked hard to keep their advances at bay.
Jones connected well with Amanda Sim who fed the attack. After a period of sustained pressure, player of the match Hannah Whiteley slipped a pass from Moppett past the keeper for the second.
Moppett and Whiteley combined again to put Okehampton 3-0 ahead. Quick passing between the midfield Ailsa Gibb, Lesley Bingham and Molly Petherbridge set Moppett up for the fourth goal just as the whistle blew for half time.
After half time the Okehampton Colum-bines were hungry for more goals to improve their position in the league table.
Several errors from the Plym Valley defence led to a number of short corners which Kim Davey converted after an effort on goal from Moppett was disallowed. A mistake from centre marker Joey Drake required a team reshuffle, but Molly Petherbridge, despite being injured. stepped into the gap and played well out of position. She demonstrated this by feeding the ball through to a waiting Davey, who then found Moppett whose run around the keeper secured her hat-trick and a convincing 6-0 win for Okehampton.
