Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East

Okehampton Argyle 1

Alphington 2

OKEHAMPTON lost only their fourth game of the season against a team just one place below them in the league.

In heavy conditions neither side was able to stamp their authority on the game and ultimately it took two penalties both for fouls on Alphington's Peter Darke and converted by Matt Wonnacott for the away team to secure three valuable points.

Harry Geering in the Argyle goal was kept busy in the first half and made a string of outstanding saves to frustrate Alphington before Steve Madge gave the home side the lead on 25 minutes with a smart header from a perfect cross from Ed Squires.

Darke and Ryan Leverton on the wings for the visitors were causing problems for the Oke defence and on 40 minutes a mistimed challenge by Chris Wills on the edge of the box on Darke gave Wonnacott the first of his brace of spot kicks. Geering has had an impressive record against penalties this season but he could do nothing against Wonnacott's powerful shot.

From the kick-off Squires had a chance for Argyle to regain the lead but he sliced his final shot after driving work to get into a scoring position.

Alphington probably had the better of the exchanges in the first half but the second half saw Argyle pressing the visitors' defence for long periods but without creating many clear cut chances. Will Hawking had probably the best chance to score 10 minutes in when he forced his way into the box but sliced his shot with only the Alphington keeper to beat.

Okehampton play with a lot of passion and drive these days, a passion that has taken them to fourth in the table but in this game a little bit more control and organisation could have served them better. Alphington defended well in numbers and coped well with everything the Argyle threw at them and relied mostly on attacking on the break.

Darke and Leverton continued to look lively on the wings and it was Darke again that drew the penalty when on 75 minutes James Williams was adjudged to have pushed him in the back. Wonnacott's spot kick gave the visitors the lead.

Okehampton continued to drive forward for the last 15 minutes for an equaliser but could not find a way past a solid defensive wall. Apart from half chances which fell to Mortimer and Madge they were unable to put much pressure on the Alphington keeper.
