IT was a long time coming — all season in fact — but Okehampton Ladies have celebrated their first-ever win right on the last day of a campaign in which they never gave up.

And what made the win even sweeter was that new team Okehampton, who have had to borrow players to bolster their squad, their 24-15 victory over fellow newbies Sidmouth was achieved entirely with local talent.

Scoring heroes of the day were Issy Edworthy and Sam Snellgrove, with Ruth Frangleton knocking over two conversions.

Captain Becky Dennis was in no doubt there is a bright future ahead for Okehampton Ladies and was quick to pay tribute to their coaches for their efforts during the season.

She said afterwards: ‘We have all created history for the Oke ladies team and the rugby club itself with the first-ever win for the ladies team and we couldn’t be prouder.

‘However, we couldn’t have achieved this without the support and dedication from our coaches Tom Powell, Steve Alford and Ian langbridge. Bring on next season.’

The hard work hasn’t stopped, though, at the end of a season which saw Okehampton play six, lose four, draw one and win one.

Dennis said that record was ‘pretty good for a relatively new squad like us. However, we are still training off season and have plenty of games already lined up for next season.’

The club is keen to welcome new players to on Thursday evenings between 7pm and 9pm at Okehampton Rugby Club.

Potential recruits can find more information on the ladies, can be found on the Okehampton Rugby Club Facebook and Instagram pages.
