DESPITE the drizzly weather, the Rotary Club of Okehampton held the first of its golf days last week.

Organisers were concerned the continuous rain could have put people off, however a full field of hardy golfers turned up for the occasion.

The organisers praised the greenskeepers at the Ashbury Hotel and said they did an amazing job drying the greens to provide good conditions for play.

The competition was in pairs and it proved to be a close contest with five teams being separated by three points.

The overall winners were Dave Stallion and Roger Halliday whose team name was the Dimpled Balls.

A spokesperson for the Rotary Club said: ‘The day was a success in raising funds for youth and sport in the area. In addition to the team entries we are grateful to our many sponsors, all the holes were sponsored by local businesses and suppliers and we are thankful for those people who donated prizes.’

The refreshment tent on the course run by the ladies of the Okehampton Inner Wheel, the Rotary Club also expressed thanks for their support.

President Rob Harman presented prizes and thanked Simon and Joan Essex for their generosity in making this facility available to the club, providing the course, staffing and food for the event .

The second Charity Golf Day will be held on July 12 on the Kigbeare course at Ashbury Golf Hotel.
