OKEHAMPTON Golf Club men ended the 2018 season top of the Dartmoor League as they saw off a close challenge from Downes Crediton to win the division one title.
The last tournament in the league calendar closed on a real high and keeping with tradition, the Dartmoor League Challenge Shield is held on the course of the winning club from the previous year – once again at Downes Crediton.
The matches are always played in a ‘four ball better ball’ format in teams of five pairs, home and away, at weekends during the summer months. The handicaps allowed are six to 18 with a 90% allowance.
The home team did have an advantage with the best score of 38 points from Adam Hull which helped Crediton secure the team victory.
However it was the golfers from 0kehampton who took the trophy as winners of the Dartmoor League when, in an exciting finish which went to the wire, they won by just one point from Downes Crediton after beating Wrangaton.
Okehampton Golf Club captain Alan Stokes told Times Sport: ‘Okehampton Golf Club’s Dartmoor League squad have done an amazing job this year, captained by Paul Prouse in his inaugural year as Dartmoor League captain.
‘Dartmoor League vice-captain Barry Down, as it transpired, scored the winning point with a hole-in-one at Wrangaton Golf Club in their last match of the season.
‘Throughout the season whichever pairings were selected they gave it their all; a tremendous team effort by every single player which culminated in a thrilling finish to the season, right down to the final match on the final day.’
