OKEHAMPTON LADIES’ FIRSTS 5

IT was perfect hockey weather and the Okehampton first team quickly became used to the new Dart pitch. Okehampton played with high intensity from the start and the whole team worked together well.

After an excellent run to the base line by Emily Rowlands and a clever pass to the penalty spot, Rochelle Woolacott scored the first goal for the visitors.

Hannah Whiteley played well to move the ball out of defence and take part in the Oke attacks. Continued pressure by the visitors’ attack meant that Lesley Bingham was able to put the ball around the Dart keeper to score a second.

Dart had some quick breaks but these were calmly counteracted by Hannah Gibbons and Laura Parsons in defence. Okehampton attacked again and after some excellent play by captain Sophie Whiteley and Molly Marvin in the middle while Nicky Strawbridge used her pace to move the ball forward. She created a one on one with the keeper and coolly put the ball in the goal.

At half time the score was 3-0 to Okehampton.

In the second half Dart continued to defend well which meant that Okehampton needed to play creatively. Lucy Wiseman worked well to pick up the ball and pass with Nicky Strawbridge who went on to score a second goal for 4-0.

Despite their continued attack, a fast ball broke through the Okehampton defensive lines leaving Alice Wiseman with a one on one with the Dart forward. She saved and cleared the ball cleanly. Nicky Pedrick then worked the ball out of defence and passing through the midfield meant that Dart were again under pressure.

The final goal went to player of the match Ellie Jenkins thanks to a powerful strike which beat the keeper.
