AT OKEHAMPTON Golf Club's centenary pro-am tournament last year's joint winner Kevin Harper (Sidmouth) once again won the popular event. Last year the pro set a course record and this year in The Professional Golfers' Association West region he again shared the victory with Richard O'Hanlon (St Kew). Harper was the last player on the course with O'Hanlon, a late entrant, who was in the clubhouse on 65. The heroes of the day were the groundstaff who squeegeed the flooded greens after a succession of heavy showers. Tournament controller Tom Sheffield even had to suspend play for 40 minutes late in the afternoon after a burst of lightning. Frenchman Jules Lompech, an assistant at Padbrook Park Golf Club, produced the shot of the day when he holed an eight-iron ace at the 133-yard seventh. Adam Frayne (Yelverton) was one on the players who shared fifth place on 67 Golf Club. Paul Hendriksen (Dinnaton), Matt Parry, Kevin Cornwall and Okehampton's John Rattenbury, who is shortly joining home professional Ashley Moon as a PGA trainee, won the team prize on 91 points.

CAPTAIN'S Day was held on Saturday at Okehampton Golf Club. This always proves to be a fun day and this year once again lived up to expectation. A three ball two to count Stableford competition was the format of the day and the winners with a credible 83 points were Rod Walker, Linda Walker and Colin Beardwell. In second place with 81 points were Gareth Holt, Ray Piper and Sue Williams on the back nine from, in third, Jonny Rattenbury, Barry Down and Ian Moore. The County Silver Meeting at Ilfracombe saw Oke GC's Sue Stanbury winning division two; she was also runner up in the handicap competition with a nett 73.
