OKEHAMPTON Tennis Club ladies travelled to Torquay to play their latest fixture on the artificial clay courts. Not being used to this playing surface it took a while for the West Devon to adjust.
Beth Dennis and Kath Bolt for Oke settled quickly and took the first set 6-3.
They lost their way slightly in the second and lost 3-6. Determined not to lose the 10 point tie break, they dug in and eventually won 10-5. It was a similar story in their next match. A slight loss of concentration resulted in Beth and Kath losing the first set 4-6, but they then went on to win the second and the tie break, securing four useful points.
The second pairing of Jackie Jarvis and Angela Herrod-Taylor had a similar experience.
They struggled in the first set to gain any real consistency and after a battle lost 4-6. Determined to up their game they took the second 6-2 and with confidence growing won the tie break.
In the second match they sailed through the first set winning by 6-0.
The opposition regrouped and took the next set but the Oke pair fought hard in the tie break to win convincingly.
Although Okehampton lost four sets, they did gain eight valuable points.
Captain Jackie Jarvis was pleased with the team's performance and the excellent outcome which leaves Okehampton at the top of division five in the Exeter and District League.
