Steven Hill Memorial Cup Moretonhampstead 1 Chagford 4 CHAGFORD maintained their grip on the trophy but not before being pushed all the way by an improved home side. Fielding a clutch of young players, the visitors coped well with the blustery conditions but had to wait until the 20th minute to take the lead. Liam Alford's long throw was met by Robbie Miller and the veteran striker bundled the ball home. With a couple of new faces on show, Chagford created well though the wind at their backs meant a few over-hit passes. Tom Pengelly, in goal, played with confidence and showed a good pair of hands when needed. Five minutes before half-time, though, he was beaten as missed tackles in his defence left Rui de Abreu Garces clear to slot the ball home for Moretonhampstead. The first five minutes of the second half saw Jamie Mallett slip the offside trap to calmly score Chagford's second. Almost immediately, Bond's volley for Moretonhampstead cannoned off Pengelly's crossbar. Playing the ball on the ground Chagford took control and when Jake Rowe picked the pocket of a hesitant 'keeper to poach a third it appeared to be game over. Moretonhampstead refused to lie down and their opponents' defence was tested but to no avail. Chagford lifted themselves for a final assault with Rowe firing just over and then Moreton conceding a penalty that Andrew Davis duly dispatched. Each team can be proud of their efforts and those in the know will be assured a good season lies ahead for both. Thanks go to the match, sponsors Hilton Building Supplies and Rob Austin and to the Community Centre management and staff for giving up their time to act as hosts.
