ELLA Percival from Okehampton fought her way to silver in a difficult pool at the Amateur Judo Association national championships in Birmingham. Her pool including fellow Tamar Judo Club member Georgie Keeble. Ella, aged 16, fought well, winning all her contests by Ippon until a close fought contest for the gold with Georgie, a multiple former national champion herself. After a long closely contested fight Ella was eventually edged out by just a koka, the lowest possible score. Aidan Bostock, from Okehampton, returned to competition after almost 18 months out to compete in the men's Dan grades black belt category for the first time. The group, made up of experienced judoka, including previous national champions was closely fought but Aidan, the youngest in the group at 18, eventually emerged on top after winning all but one fight with Ippon throws, to win the gold. The pair now form part of the AJA National Squad and will represent them internationally in Mierlo, Holland on May 10 and 11. Both Ella and Aidan are trained by Roger Downs, sixth dan and BJA Performance Coach of the year, at Tamar Judo Centre in Saltash. They are both also qualified coaches and help to teach at Okehampton Judo Club on Monday nights.
