Devon 2 League
Plympton Victoria 0
North Tawton 64
NORTH Tawton made an impressive start to their Devon League 2 season with a resounding win over Plympton Victoria in Plymouth. Led on the day by vice captain James Miller they quickly opened their account with an early try from full back Chisholm who collected an inside pass from scrum half Jack Phare and evaded a lacklustre defence to dot down for the score. The conversion by fly half Jamie Stevens confirmed the 7 points.
Shortly afterwards a scrum to North Tawton about 15 metres out resulted in the ball being fed to the fly half Stevens who stepped neatly through a defensive gap for the second try, and duly added the conversion. A somewhat speculative kick out of defence by Tawton led to a lucky bounce for Chisholm, following up fast, and he was able to chip through and follow up with a try, converted by Stevens, taking Tawton to a 21-0 lead within the first 20 minutes.
Plympton Victoria rallied and put up a strong defence but Tawton were able to put together a move off a scrum from five metres out.
A good ball back inside by right wing Graham Sage gave Chisholm his third try; the conversion was missed. A long kick out of defence by Stevens was fumbled by the Plympton defence and Tawton were quickly on the ball with Will Lethbridge going over for the try; this was also converted by Stevens.
Although Plympton had a good spell at the end of the half and neat close quarter work saw them pressuring Tawton's line, they kicked away possession and the half ended with Tawton leading 33-0.
North Tawton opened the second half with another early score by Will Lethbridge following a good build-up by the scrum. The try went unconverted.
The Tawton pack kept up the pressure and was looking good against determined opposition, linking well with their three-quarters. However, Plympton had upped their game, tying the ball into the mauls and giving their own threes a chance to attack.
A good line-out take by Rob McBain set Tawton back into the attack from the Plympton 22 metre line. A scrum win by Tawton and a neat change of direction by their fly half saw the ball spun out to left wing Alex Arthurs who went over for a debut try in the corner. With the conversion creeping over the bar Tawton eased into a 45-0 lead.
Although the match was well won the closing phases were no less competitive, but North Tawton still had time for three more ties. Two of these came from their outside centre using his speed to outfox the defence, and the final one from outside centre Tom Davis. Two of these were converted leaving North Tawton as 64-0 winners.
Next week North Tawton are scheduled to play Exeter Saracens, away.
All players and anyone interested in playing for the club are reminded that training is on Tuesdays at 7pm at Taw Meadows.
