Cornwall and Devon
AFTER last week’s big win over Tavistock an on-form North Tawton side secured another big win this time away to Topsham.
On a hot sunny afternoon the North Tawton side was expecting a close game and right from the first whistle the Tawts were on the attack. After just three minutes Jordan Cornthwaite went over for the first try of the match to the visitors with the kick added by captain Gary Sizmur to put North Tawton 7-0 up.
With the sun shining down on a hard, dusty pitch the home team started to form some phases of play of their own and hit back with a well worked try with the kick missed for 5-7.
Two fast teams both tried to play running rugby which was developing into a good, evenly matched game until Will Lethbridge cut fast and loose down his wing with the first of his brace of tries for North Tawton; with the conversion missed it was 5-12. A penalty a piece took the score to 8-15 before the second of the Lethbridge tries saw the score at half time North Tawton 8-22 up.
In the second half the home team made a big effort to be the next on the score board but the Tawton defence showed it can hold firm when required blunting several attacking phases from the Topsham backs.
The visitors really put this game well out of reach of a tiring Topsham side with some great running play by Si Cox backed up and finished by Kev Dennis kick by Gary Sizmur to increase the lead to 8-29 and a the bonus point safe for the afternoon.
The away side really turned up the heat with tries from Ryan Gross, Matty Dennis and Luke Dennis, all with successful conversions by Sizmur taking North Tawton’s final total of 50 with Topsham adding a conciliatory try of their own for a final score 15-50.
This was a well drilled performance from a North Tawton side full of confidence all playing for each other and enjoying their rugby. The man of the match was Will Lethbridge.
