THE renaming of a renowned moorland running race to honour a popular member of Okehampton Running Club has been welcomed by her family.
The Great West Fell Run has been been given a new name by the race’s organisers —’Marilyn’s Meldon Madness’ — in memory of ORC Marilyn Cooper who died in 2016 at the age of 61.
The event takes place at 2pm on Saturday, August 5 from Meldon Dam.
Paul Cooper, her husband, was delighted with such a tribute to his beloved wife, who was a founding member of the running club.
Such was her love and dedication to the sport she had qualified to represent Great Britain in her age group at the European Duathlon Champion-ships 2016 but sadly died before she could take part.
He told the Times: ’Marilyn just loved running. It just goes to show how well thought of she was by her fellow Okehampton Running Club members to change the name of such an iconic run to honour her memory. Hopefully they may consider keeping it in the future. I would be delighted if they did.’
Paul said their sons, Michael and Peter, will be travelling down to Okehampton for the special event.
Marilyn was a prolific racer and rarely found to be happier than when representing the club and running on the moor. Paul Cooper has donated a trophy in her memory which will be awarded to the first female ORC home.
Marilyn’s Meldon Madness is the only race that takes runners to the highest point in the south of England. The 415m ascent is tough enough to challenge any off-road runner but it offers a rare opportunity for anyone to try their first fell race.
The route is beautiful with stunning views over the county from Yes Tor and High Willhays (the highest point) before a welcome descent to Black Tor, and down Homerton Hill to the finish at Meldon Reservoir.
There will be prizes for the first, second and third male and female. Prizes for the first M40, M50, M60, F40, F50, F60.
The race headquarters is at Meldon Dam car park (near Okehampton grid ref SX561917).
