EIGHT schools from the Okehampton Learning Community took part in a football and netball tournament, hosted by North Tawton Community Primary School last week.

In the football tournament, Okehampton Primary ran out as winners on 15 points, closely followed by South Tawton Primary in second place with 12 points and North Tawton in third on ten points. Chagford and Hatherleigh came joint fourth, with Boasley Cross finishing in sixth place.

Exbourne Primary were the winners of the netball tournament, with Okehampton Primary School not far behind in second place. North Tawton and Northlew finished joint third, with South Tawton in fifth, Hatherleigh in sixth and Chagford and Boasley Cross finishing joint seventh.

Nick D'Agorne, headteacher of North Tawton Primary, said: 'In spite of the heavy showers forecast for the day, the competitors managed to avoid most of these, so that the event ran according to plan, with both the host and visiting schools thoroughly enjoying the festive atmosphere of friendly competition.

'Okehampton College kindly enabled some of their students to act as referees and umpires for the event, releasing the teaching staff to support their children on the touch lines.

'There was a good level of challenge, from both large and small schools, with some very close games.

'It was especially pleasing to see one of the smaller schools in the group winning the netball competition, as this tournament aims to ensure all children can compete in a friendly competition with all schools having an even opportunity to win.

'Exbourne players were unbeaten on the day and provided a real challenge for all players, both from large schools and small.

'The football tournament teams were also very evenly matched, with the smaller schools only having a difference of five points between the team that came second and the team who came sixth. At the end of the day, Okehampton Primary succeeded with some stunning goals.'
