OKEHAMPTON and District Local History Society will be holding its annual meeting on Wednesday April 11, along with a quiz and refreshments.

The meeting starts at 7.30pm at the Ockment Centre.

In May, the group's new programme of talks will start. The first will be on industrial archaeology in the Meldon area of Dartmoor National Park, given by Mark Norman.

More industrial archaeology will be the topic of discussion in July when Helen Harris will talk about the Haytor Tramway and Stover Canal.

The year's programme will also include Robert Hesketh on Devon place names, the history of the Ten Tors Challenge by Simon Dell, and Paul Rendell telling the story behind the Dartmoor location of the blockbuster film War Horse.

The group will have two summer outings, one to Meldon and the other to the newly re-opened Royal Albert Memorial Musuem in Exeter.

Meetings of the society are held on the second Wednesday of each month in the Ockment Centre at 7.30pm.

New members are always welcome, particularly at the beginning of the new annual programme.

Anyone interested should contact Malcolm Francis-Laing on 01837 840158.

Non-members can attend meetings at a charge of £2 per person.
