I HAVE been in correspondence with various councillors concerning the new coach park in Okehampton and, while I am assured that there is going to be a public consultation when the traffic order is applied for, I am concerned that it will take place during the school holidays when people are on holiday.  I grant that there will be very few coaches making use of the facility but there will still be inconvenience to other road users and a possibility of traffic backing up in East Street if a school bus turns into Mill Road at the same time as a coach is trying to exit the coach park into East Street.  I find it extremely disturbing that no consultation with the police was required on this busy junction, as any coaches pulling out of the car park into Mill Road will need to swing across onto the opposite side of the road to complete the manoeuvre.  Will there be signage for the coaches prohibiting them from travelling along Mill Road towards the College?  I sat enjoying a welcome cup of tea in the bakery opposite Mill Road this afternoon and watched nine coaches cross the junction to go to the college for the school run.  Five of the coaches drove up onto the pavement as there were cars waiting at the traffic lights.  A safe junction and suitable for extra coach traffic?  I don't think so. Teresa Bishop Fox Close Okehampton THE two/three coach parking spaces that have been put in the Mill Road car park is generating much concern — mainly over the access/exit. In a statement issued by West Devon Borough Council we are told, and I quote, 'With regard to highway safety, it is acknowledged that the entrance is tight, but the alternative was not to have coach parking at all'. We are not told if highways, health and safety or the police have been involved in this project. We have also been told by our Devon County councillor, West Devon Borough councillor and town councillor Kevin Ball, and again I quote, 'On the aspect of safety, it is a driver's responsibility to check that exit/access is clear before manoeuvring, so I don't see this as a problem'. We are aware that the Mill Road car park is not easily accessible, and there are genuine fears that putting a tourist coach park there is an 'accident waiting to happen'. Why is there now a need for a public consultation when the deed has already been done? Edna Hicks Abbeyford Court Okehampton WITH reference to last week's article 'Coach parking plan on the right track', I felt I had to respond. Although it is good news to finally get coach parking back in Okehampton, the Mill Road car park is definitely not 'on the right track'. The considerable amount of money that has been spent so far could have been spent more wisely on making the derelict Old Mill and Bostocks area into a brilliant coach park with easy access to the town centre. Also, I wonder if any of our 'mature' councillors have ever been on a coach trip because the first thing the mostly elderly passengers look for on arrival at their destination is the toilet facilities, of which the ones in Mill Road have been demolished.
