THE much beloved Okehampton Rotary May Fair and its duck races is to take place on Sunday, May 4. The town mayor Cllr the Rev Mike Davies will declare the event officially open at noon, but all the fun of the fair actually starts at 11am. During the afternoon, the town's army and air force cadets will be officially affiliated to the Royal British Legion. The parade to mark the affiliation of the Okehampton Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps detachments to the local branch of the Royal British Legion will start at 2.45pm and will include a marching display by the Corps of Drums of the Plymouth and Cornwall Wing of the ATC and the Bugles and Drums of the Devon ACF. Attractions include a dog show organised by the Devon German Shepherd Dog Rescue, fairground rides, a bouncy slide, a climbing wall, skittles, a hill climb challenge for bikes, face painting and a display of vintage tractors. There will also be a number of charity stalls and street entertainers, and Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band will play music throughout the afternoon. Several of the town's other community organisations will be involved. Okehampton Round Table will hold a dartboard challenge, while Okehampton Lions will sell ice cream. The Inner Wheel will man a tea and coffee tent, while Okehampton Rotary itself will be serving up tasty burgers. All monies raised will go to local causes. The fair would not be complete without the duck races along the river. Tickets are available in advance from Rotary members or on the day. There will be four races from 2pm. The first prize in each race is £100, with £25 for second place, £15 for third and £10 for the last duck in each race.
