Okehampton Argyle 2

Callington Town 3

ARGYLE are still awaiting their first points this season after going down by the odd goal in five against near-neighbours Callington, but they were unlucky not to get a point in this fiercely competitive match. Okehampton still played some excellent attacking football and the game was an entertaining one for spectators.

The first half got away to an exciting start and play swung from end to end as both teams committed themselves to attack. Chances were created at both ends but Argyle goalie Harry Geering and Callington's Tom Beman were in fine form.

The deadlock was broken on 26 minutes when the visitors won a corner on the left. Chris Clarke's in-swinging corner travelled directly into the net with Geering being blocked from getting the ball by two tall Callington forwards.

Argyle continued to play good football and were level on 39 minutes when Ben Waters and Frankie Nomah-Koneh played a lovely interchange on the edge of the Callington box, setting Nomah-Koneh free to shoot past Beman.

With a minute to half-time, Argyle threw away their good work, when a terrible ball in midfield left their defence totally exposed and sent Callington racing towards the home goal. The visitors took the ball to the line before squaring back for Phil Burgoyne to crash home from 15 yards.

For the first 20 minutes of the second half, Okehampton continually pushed Callington back and the visitors kept their lead intact with some resolute and skilful defensive work. Callington did give Argyle a scare as they broke out to hit the bar ten minutes in and then forced a good save from Geering low to his left on 69 minutes.

Callington came back into the game and started to take the initiative. They increased their lead on 79 minutes when Phil Burgoyne cleverly held the ball up on the edge of the box and then laid it back for Chris Clarke to fire home. Argyle fought hard to save the match and with only three minutes remaining, Nomah-Koneh beat two players on the left of the box and squared the ball back for Ben Waters to shoot home and complete the scoring.

This was an exciting game and Argyle were unlucky not to salvage a point. New central defender Sam Brooks looking solid and Dale Chadwick, playing at right back was outstanding. Up front, the understanding between Frankie Nomah-Koneh and Ben Waters is beginning to pay dividends and producing some exciting football for spectators.
