TAVISTOCK-based band covers band Sacred Assembly have just recorded their first album and EP featuring their own songs.

The band was keen to create its own identity having performed on the pub circuit in Tavistock and Okehampton for a couple of years now.

Known for its rousing renditions of Beatles and Rolling Stones tracks, Sacred Assembly plays all kinds of pop/rock from the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s but the band is less well known for its church music influences.

James Medland plays drums at St Andrew’s Church, Whitchurch and lead singer Andrew Jones leads worship at Tavistock Methodist Church. Writing their own material has enabled them to put some religious touches to their music.

‘It’s quite subtle,’ said James. ‘It’s not in your face and we don’t preach to people but there is a reference to Christianity in our music if you want to find it. If not, it’s just easy listening music.

‘We all met through the church and all the music we played in church we wanted to take out and play in pubs but obviously you cannot play hymns in a pub! Our music crosses over the secular and religious boundaries and we hope people like it.’

Sacred Assembly’s album is called Smile and the EP is called Light, the latter of which is now available to download on iTunes. Both are produced by local music guru Dave Rich.

The band recently played a gig at the Kings Arm in South Zeal and is hoping to play some gigs at St Andrew’s Church, Whitchurch soon — watch this space for more!
