TRADERS and crafters are being sought out to take part in three fairs organised to support the Museum of Dartmoor Life.

Edna Hicks, a trustee of the museum, has organised three craft fairs in the Charter Hall, inviting crafters and traders to come along and sell their goods.

Each trader pays £6 for a stall, which will go to the museum, along with money raised from a raffle and donations.

The fairs have been organised not only to raise money for the museum, but to try and raise its profile in the community.

The museum is planning to have a stall at each of the markets promoting their work, and may bring over some of their artefacts to show people.

If successful, the fairs could become a monthly venture.

Edna said: 'Local people don't go to the museum, and we need to get them involved.

'It is our history, and it needs to be recognised and enjoyed.'

The chair of trustees Robin Brindley is hoping the museum can establish better involvement in the local community. Among plans for the upcoming year are to create better links with Okehampton College and the primary schools in the area, and to invite artists to use the museum gallery.

'We want to make the museum blossom, and put it much more in the public eye of Okehampton and further afield,' said Mr Brindley.

'I have met elderly people who have lived in Okehampton their whole lives who didn't know it was here.

'We want to be much more involved in a lot more things in the town.'

The craft fairs take place on Saturday June 22, Saturday July 27 and Saturday August 24.
