AS president of the Okehampton and District branch of Cancer Research UK, Okehampton mayor Cllr the Rev Mike Davies chaired the group's annual meeting held at Fairplace Church recently.

The meeting attracted a good number of people and the president congratulated the local committee for once again exceeding expectations having raised £7,223.39 over the last year.

The mayor told the group that since chairing last year's annual meeting his father-in-law had sadly lost the fight against cancer, and the disease was very real within his own family.

He reminded all present that cancer was a disease that has affected many families within the Okehampton area and the need for continued research was vital.

Clive Pedwell, the local fundraising manager for Cancer Research UK, echoed the mayor's congratulations and reminded all present that out of all the funds donated to Cancer Research UK, 80% is actually used in research.

Mr Pedwell said this was a strong message that needed to get out into the community.

He said 2014 was a significant year as it marked the organisation's 60th anniversary.

Mike Davies remains as president.

The chairman is Carole Holt, with Audrey Richardson as vice chairman. Brenda Hockridge is secretary and treasurer is Richard Weller.
