VOLUNTEERS joined children and families from Okehampton Primary School when they took part in The Big Tidy up last weekend.

Helpers wore bright green tabards and carried bright rubbish bags and litter pickers during the extensive tidy up around Okehampton and the school grounds. Recycling was also sorted and put out for collection.

Mayor of Okehampton Cllr David Weekes, who joined in the event, said: 'It was a very cold, but worthwhile event.

'The children really enjoyed themselves and they loved using the long litter picking rods— we collected around 15 bags in total.

'We will have to look at ways of prevention rather than cure — especially adult smokers who flick their cigarette ends all over the place.'
