THE air at Holsworthy Golf Club has been blue in the last few weeks — all to raise money for a theatre company in Okehampton for adults with learning disabilities.
Sylvia Caunter, ladies captain of Holsworthy Golf Club, and fellow members at the club have been hard at work over the last few weeks to raise £500 for Get Changed Theatre Company.
Among the fundraising efforts were a raffle, and a sponsored swim of 50 lengths by a member of the ladies' team. Members also donated money into a swear jar, giving money each time they cursed while out on the course. The swear jar raised more than £200 of the total raised.
Sylvia visited the group during one of their sessions last week to donate a cheque for £500 to Get Changed.
She said: 'It is really nice to support a local charity and see the money being used to support people in the area.
'It is also really nice to come here this morning and see the people who benefit from the group, clearly having a great time. It is lovely, and we are more than happy to help.'
Christine Munkenbeck, chair and trustee for Get Changed, said: 'Donations like this are absolutely crucial to us.
'We have raised three quarters of our funding for the year, but we are always applying for funding and grants, and donations like this make a massive difference to us.
'We are incredibly grateful to Sylvia and everyone at Holsworthy Golf Club for their efforts to support us.'
Founded in 1995, Get Changed is the only theatre company in Devon for adults with learning disabilities and mental health problems.
It runs a continuous programme of drama and education projects, leading to performances in the wider community.
These performances raise awareness of the challenges and prejudices those in the company face daily.
Get Changed has members coming from Okehampton, Hatherleigh, North Tawton and the wider area.
They address topical disability issues in an accessible and inspirational way through drama.
By promoting social inclusion, participants can build their confidence and realise their full potential.
