THE developer Persimmon Homes has withdrawn its application to build 129 units on land off Crediton Road, after re-assessing the needs and demands of the town and its residents.
The plan for the homes, with associated garages, footpaths, road, public open spaces and drainage, were due to go before the planning and licensing committee this week.
In a statement, Simon Perks, managing director for Persimmon Homes South West, said: 'For the time being we have taken the decision to withdraw our plans for our development in Okehampton, in order to amend the application so it's more in line with the demands of the local authority.
'I would like to take this opportunity to stress our commitment to the development and focus on delivering much needed housing and affordable housing to the area.
'I can confirm we will be re-submitting our plans for the scheme when we have resolved the issues with the local authority.'
West Devon Borough Council's principal planning officer, Ed Persse, said: 'We have been in discussions with Persimmon Homes continuously, right up until the middle of last week.
'They were looking to make significant changes, which we couldn't accept because they were too different from the original plans submitted.
'From our point of view, the withdrawal was perfectly amicable and makes a lot of sense.
'We are expecting to have further discussions and to see a new application in the coming weeks.'
Town, borough and county councillor for Okehampton, Christine Marsh, said: 'I would rather Persimmon Homes withdrew and got the application right before they went ahead with the development.
'The town council's main concern is ensuring the primary school and all the infrastructure is in place.'
The application was part of a larger housing development plan in the town for 900 additional homes in Okehampton on the east side of the town.
