Flags are being lowered to half-mast in West Devon following the death of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh earlier today.

Cllr Tony Leech, Mayor of West Devon Borough Council, said: “We have been deeply saddened by the news of the death of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh. On behalf of West Devon Borough Council, our thoughts and sincere sympathies are with the Royal Family at this time of loss.

“He has served our country since 1952 with his royal and philanthropic duties. His memory will live on through the achievements of those young people who undertake the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

“Our flags will be lowered to half-mast during the mourning period.

“A national online condolence e-book will be available shortly from the Palace, where residents can pay their respects. If you do not have a computer or smartphone, or someone who can help you complete the online condolence book, our officers can do this for you. Please call our answerphone and leave a message at 01803 861100. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 we will be no physical condolence book available at this time. When it is safe to do so, we will offer those who do not have the facilities to sign the online book, the opportunity to sign a book at our offices.”

“Due to Covid, we would ask, rather than leaving flowers, if residents would like to show their respects to the Duke, we suggest that they might like to donate to one of the Duke’s charities instead. You can find a list of his charities here: https://bit.ly/38qlQXv
