A SUPER-RECYCLER from Okehampton has been shortlisted for a county award, following her hard work to protect Devon's environment.

Fran Rickwood, Okehampton Primary School's eco school co-ordinator, has been shortlisted in the school recycling hero adult category of the inaugural Recycle Devon Thank You awards. The awards have been founded to mark the ten-year anniversary of the Don't Let Devon Go to Waste campaign.

Fran goes up against nominees from Great Torrington School and Holsworthy Primary for the award.

Chairman of the Devon Authorities Waste Reduction and Recycling Committee, Cllr Mike Walters said: 'The committee felt that these people deserved a special thank you for all that they do to help improve the local environment.

'It's been particularly pleasing to see that everyone from the age of 8 to 80 something has got on board with the recycling message in Devon, many working voluntarily and really going over and above the call of duty. My thanks to all the nominees — they are all winners.'

Fran was nominated by her mother, Patricia Kingsland. In her nomination, Patricia said: 'Frances works tirelessly for her school, Okehampton Primary. She was initially employed as a teaching assisant but soon became involved with encouraging pupils and staff to recycle everything that was recyclable.

'She gives so much of her own private time above her working hours, but finds the results very rewarding. Her dedication to the school and this cause is truly justifiable and I am very pleased to put her forward for this nomination.'

There were seven categories which people could be nominated for, including community group recycling hero, collection crew or operative category, recycling centre operatives and site staff, and a school award for children.

Some of the shortlisted entries include an eco-club at a school in Holsworthy, a real nappy scheme in Exeter, and a community recycling project in Honiton.

Each shortlisted candidate will receive a recycled glass trophy, and there will be a special prize and trophy for the overall winner.

The award ceremony takes place today (Thursday) at County Hall, hosted by Heart Radio's Matt and Caroline from the breakfast show.
